Despite being a central theme in movements like #MeToo and the #TotalShutDown, consent remains a challenging concept to grasp. Interestingly, many individuals, including women, lack a clear understanding of what constitutes consent, despite widespread knowledge that rape is unacceptable. The challenge lies not in raising awareness about consent, but rather in establishing a universal understanding of it.
To adress this, Wise 4 Afrika launched “Is it OK?”, a WhatsApp campaign seeking to foster a shared understanding of consent and encourage individuals to pose a direct question to elicit a genuine response.
Establishing consent is the pre-requisite to any sexual encounter. With this in mind, one of the easiest ways to confirm someone’s consent is by asking:
“Is it OK?”
