#TheTotalShutdown Intersectional Women’s March

On August 1st, 2018, more than 40,000 womxn, girls, and gender non-conforming individuals took to the streets for #TheTotalShutdown Intersectional Womxn’s March, the largest coordinated protest by womxn in South Africa’s history. Marching in cities across the country, they demanded urgent action against gender-based violence, highlighting the need to address rape, domestic violence, and femicide, as well as the ways these issues intersect with race, class, and sexual orientation. Participants also called for concrete policy changes to combat gender-based violence.
