This report provides an overview of the Gauteng Provincial Pre-Summit findings and highlights the province’s key contributions in tackling Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The Gauteng Summit, held in August 2022, brought together over 700 delegates from diverse sectors, including government, civil society organisations, law enforcement, and grassroots workers. The report sheds light on alarming statistics, such as the high percentage of female-headed households and the disproportionate rates of sexual offences in Gauteng, with the province recording a significant number of rapes and other contact crimes. Despite some reductions in reported incidences, the report points to challenges such as under-reporting, low conviction rates, and a lack of specialised skills and adequate funding for NGOs. It also identifies gaps in service provision, including the need for more shelter services for displaced victims, particularly from marginalised groups. The report offers detailed recommendations, urging the acceleration of prevention programmes, the establishment of more coordinated support structures, and greater integration of education-based interventions in schools. It calls for a strengthened multi-sectoral response, with an emphasis on empowering vulnerable groups and enhancing collaboration between all stakeholders.
