Memorandum of Demands

On 1st August 2018, cisgender and transgender womxn, along with gender non-conforming people (GNC), delivered a memorandum of demands to the South African government, calling for urgent action against gender-based violence. Acknowledging the immense harm caused by the scourge of GBV, the memorandum lists 24 demands, each representing a year since the establishment of South Africa’s constitutional democracy, during which the state has failed to ensure the constitutional right to live free from violence. Despite the tireless efforts of numerous NGOs and interest groups, without comprehensive and integrated action, nothing will change. The memorandum calls for a multi-stakeholder approach, with all sectors of government working together to better protect womxn and ensure freedom from violence, making clear that political will is essential for real change.
