Northern Cape Provincial Pre-Summit Report

In September 2022, the Northern Cape hosted a summit on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, with over 250 delegates from government, civil society, and faith-based organisations. The event aimed to align provincial priorities with the Presidential Summit 2, addressing key areas for action. Statistics show concerning levels of female-headed households and food insecurity, with many women experiencing unemployment and hardship. GBVF data from the province reveals an increase in reported sexual offences, which contrasts with the national trend. Challenges include a lack of coordination between organisations, underreporting of cases, limited resources, and insufficient police training. The report highlights several achievements, such as the creation of a provincial GBVF Task Team and the rollout of awareness programmes. However, significant gaps remain, including a lack of funding, research, and essential services for survivors. Recommendations focus on strengthening accountability, accelerating implementation of the NSP, and amplifying community participation in tackling GBVF.
