Western Cape Provincial Pre-Summit Report

In October 2022, the Western Cape hosted its summit on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), attended by over 1000 delegates online and at satellite venues in Cape Town, George, and Robertson. The summit brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including government, civil society, labour, business, and activists, to share insights and foster collaboration. The report outlines the high prevalence of GBVF in areas such as Delft and Nyanga, with female-headed households facing particular vulnerability, especially regarding food insecurity. Key interventions, like the establishment of the first Thutuzela Care Centre and the integration of GBV education in schools, have made notable strides. However, the report also highlights challenges, such as gaps in evidence-based strategies, insufficient consultation with national stakeholders, and limited multi-sectoral engagement. Recommendations for the national summit emphasise the need for stronger accountability measures, more inclusive approaches that focus on marginalised groups, and the expansion of victim support services. Enhanced community leadership and collaboration are also seen as crucial to driving change in the fight against GBVF in the Western Cape.
