Gender-based Violence in South Africa is a National Crisis.
The End GBVF Collective is South Africa’s largest volunteer network fighting gender-based violence and femicide. It is a movement of activists and organisations working together to put the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on GBVF into action. This work is guided by six Intervention Pillars, which focus on key priorities from the NSP.
Our Intervention Pillars
Effective leadership and resources are crucial in addressing GBVF, ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice. We must hold all sectors of society accountable for creating a safe, GBVF-free environment.
Addressing GBVF requires making violence against women, children, and LGBTQIA+ persons unacceptable through inclusive prevention strategies. By changing behaviours and tackling toxic masculinities, we can build a safer society.
A strong criminal justice system is essential to support survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. With convictions in only 8% of reported rape cases in South Africa, improving the justice system is crucial to reducing GBVF and protecting victims.
With one of the highest GBV rates globally, South Africa needs a survivor-centric approach. Ensuring access to safe spaces and quality services from the justice, health, and education systems is crucial for supporting survivors.
Financial dependency often traps women in abusive relationships. To address GBVF sustainably, we must empower women economically by providing access to employment, housing, land, and financial resources, reducing their vulnerability to violence.
Researching effective interventions and improving information management are vital in addressing GBVF. Reliable data is crucial for developing and evaluating policies to combat gender-based violence and femicide.
